Peel Moat

Peel Moat appears on some of the earliest Medieval maps of Burnage - can you see it in the bottom right of this section of the 1934 Ordnance Survey?

Peel towers are small fortified towers, unique to the Scottish Borders and North of England. They helped defend people and livestock during the Border Raids and acted as watch towers, where a fire could be lit to warn of any approaching danger.

Do you think this is what our Peel Moat could have been?

Try to imagine the history of the place, what do you think might have taken place here?

The area is now part of the Heaton Moor Golf Club .You can walk onto it to find it or use our Green Burnage Spotters Guide to find it - just watch out for golfers!
