Errwood Road
Text
The boulevard is made up of Lime and Plane trees.
You will often see these trees in city parks, chosen because they thrive despite the air pollution.
As the residents of the quiet Burnage Lane - which often saw hundreds of weekend walkers escaping the bustle of the city - voiced concerns about how the new estates might increase traffic on their peaceful street, Manchester Corporation designed Errwood road to be the main thoroughfare for traffic.
Two hundred and seventy five unemployed workers were recruited to build Errwood Road and the trees were planted right away. There was a park and multiple playgrounds drawn into the original design for the road, maintaining the green and communal vision for the estate.
Have you watched the trees grow and change over the years? What are your memories of Errwood Road?
