Paying the Rent

A story which has come out of our conversations with Burnage people and during our sessions leafing through council minutes at Archives+, is the struggle some tenants had in paying their rent.

Rents were higher than elsewhere in Manchester, and while the housing was much higher quality, tenants couldn't always afford the luxury.

There are lists of evictions, particularly during The Depression and eventually rents were lowered.

Here Chris Drew remembers his Father's commitment to paying the rent, having seen evictions happening around his previous home in Gorton.
